Demand Side Response (DSR) is a mechanism that enables consumers to actively participate in balancing the power system by adjusting their electricity consumption in response to grid conditions. This adjustment can be incentivized by price signals, contracts, or direct requests from system operators or energy suppliers. DSR is particularly crucial for integrating renewable energy sources and enhancing grid flexibility.


What is DSR?

A strategy where consumers voluntarily reduce or shift their energy usage during peak demand periods or when the grid faces stability challenges. Can be applied by industrial, commercial, and residential users.

Goals of DSR

  • Improve grid stability by balancing supply and demand in real-time.
  • Optimize energy use and reduce reliance on peaking power plants.
  •  
  • Support the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources (e.g., wind, solar).

How DSR works?

Signal from the Operator – The transmission system operator (e.g., PSE in Poland) or a DSR aggregator sends a signal to the consumer, informing them of the need to reduce or shift energy consumption. The aggregator’s call is sent at least 7 hours before the planned reduction.

Energy Consumption Reduction – A consumer who agrees to participate in the DSR program reduces their energy demand within a specified time. This can be achieved by switching off some equipment, shifting energy-intensive processes to another time, or using energy storage systems.

Compensation – Consumers participating in DSR receive compensation for their readiness to reduce consumption.
